Durability Standards
Interior Signs That Last — and Stay Compliant
Indoor signs face a different set of challenges: UV from lighting, humidity from HVAC, chemical exposure from cleaning, and strict fire and accessibility codes.
UV-Stable Inks & Materials
Interior signs are exposed to fluorescent and LED lighting for 10–16 hours per day. SOC uses UV-stable latex and UV-cure inks, UV-inhibitor acrylic faces, and dye-sublimation fabric prints that resist fading under continuous artificial lighting. Consumer inkjet prints are not specified for permanent interior signage.
Scratch & Abrasion Resistance
High-traffic interior signs — ADA plaques, lobby letters, directory panels — must resist daily contact. SOC uses hardcoat acrylic, powder-coated metal, and overlaminate on printed graphics. Photopolymer ADA signs are extremely durable. We do not use uncoated foam or paper-faced substrates in high-contact locations.
Humidity & HVAC Tolerance
HVAC systems cycle humidity between 30–60% RH daily. SOC uses aluminum and acrylic construction that handles this cycling without warping, delaminating, or corroding. Sealed electrical components in backlit signs prevent condensation damage. Paper-based and MDF substrates are avoided in humid environments.
Fire & Building Code Compliance
Interior finish materials are regulated by NFPA 101 and the IBC. SOC specifies Class A or B flame-spread materials for all interior signs in egress paths and occupied spaces. Foam substrates require intumescent coating. Fabric graphics must meet NFPA 701. Certificates of compliance provided on request.
ADA & Accessibility Standards
ADA-compliant signs require Grade 2 Braille, 1/32" raised characters, non-glare finish, and 60–70% contrast between characters and background. SOC produces ADA signs to ICC A117.1 and the ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Incorrect ADA signs expose building owners to federal enforcement and litigation.
Chemical & Cleaning Resistance
Healthcare, food service, and industrial interiors require signs that survive aggressive cleaning protocols. SOC specifies aluminum, polycarbonate, and acrylic materials that resist bleach, quaternary ammonium compounds, isopropyl alcohol, and common industrial solvents. Vinyl graphics receive chemical-resistant overlaminate in these environments.
