Outdoor Signs — Commercial Sign Types, UV & Hurricane Rated | SOC
Outdoor Signs Built
for the Real World
10 outdoor sign types. Every one specified for UV exposure, fade resistance, weather sealing, and wind loads up to 160 mph. SOC operates in coastal markets — we engineer for hurricanes, not just rain.

Durability Standards
Built for What Nature Throws at It
Every outdoor sign SOC specifies, fabricates, or installs is evaluated against the environment it will live in — not just the day it goes up.
Solar UV Protection
Commercial signage faces 1,000–1,500 UV index hours per year in the Southeast and Sun Belt. SOC specifies PVDF (Kynar) powder coats, UV-inhibitor polycarbonate faces, and UV-stable vinyl films rated for 7–15 years of direct solar exposure. We do not use consumer-grade materials on commercial installations.
Fade Resistance
Color shift is the #1 complaint on aging signs. SOC uses fluoropolymer topcoats, UV-stable translucent films, and cast vinyl graphics — not calendared vinyl — for exterior applications. Printed graphics receive UV overlaminate as standard. We specify materials to the environment, not to the lowest bid.
Weather Sealing & Moisture
Water intrusion destroys signs from the inside. SOC uses silicone-sealed letter returns, neoprene cabinet gaskets, weep holes, and weatherproof conduit entries on all illuminated outdoor signs. Aluminum construction eliminates rust. Masonry bases are designed to shed water and survive freeze-thaw cycles.
Hurricane & High-Wind Ratings
SOC operates extensively in coastal markets — South Carolina, Florida, and Gulf Coast states. Channel letters are engineered to 130 mph. Monument signs to 150 mph. Pylon signs are structurally engineered per ASCE 7 wind maps with concrete pier foundations. Coastal installations use through-bolt or epoxy-anchor systems, not surface adhesive.
Substrate & Coating Systems
The substrate is the foundation of durability. SOC specifies 5052 aluminum alloy (not 3003), .080 minimum gauge for structural panels, and hot-dip galvanized or epoxy-primed steel for embedded posts. Coating systems are matched to the substrate and environment — powder coat for aluminum, PVDF for long-term exterior, epoxy primer + polyurethane for steel.
Electrical & Surge Protection
Illuminated outdoor signs require UL 48 listing, GFCI protection, weatherproof conduit, and transient voltage surge suppressors (TVSS). SOC coordinates with licensed electricians and ensures all electrical work meets NEC Article 600 and local amendments. Lightning arrestors on tall structures in lightning-prone markets.
Outdoor Signs for Business and Storefronts
The right outdoor sign helps people recognize your business and find the correct entrance. Signage Operations Command helps businesses choose exterior signage around their brand, building and location. Use this page to compare sign types, then explore the option that fits your property and the way customers approach it.
Compare the sign types
Channel letters and dimensional lettering can identify a storefront or building. Cabinet signs provide another format for illuminated identity. Monument, pylon and post-and-panel signs address different property and roadside needs. Digital displays should be evaluated around the message, viewing conditions and operating requirements.
Start with the site and message
Share your address, building photos, available sign area and approved logo. Describe whether the sign must be visible after dark, whether it identifies several tenants and whether the property already has sign standards. These details help narrow the options before a design is developed.
Choose the delivery scope
SOC offers make-and-ship projects as well as coordinated design, manufacturing and installation. If you already have an installer, identify that responsibility when requesting a quote. If the project spans several properties, provide the site list and brand standards so the work can be reviewed as a coordinated scope.
